Aerobic Physical Activity, Resistance Exercise, and Sedentary Times of Stroke Survivors

Abstract Body: Background and Purpose: Stroke survivors are at a higher risk of having long sedentary time (ST) and low physical activity (PA). We investigated the factors associated with aerobic PA, resistance exercise (RE) and long ST in stroke survivors in a community setting.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Surveys from 2016 to 2020. We compared the level of moderate to vigorous aerobic PA, RE, and ST between stroke survivors and controls. Furthermore, we performed a multivariate logistic regression analysis to investigate the factors associated with aerobic physical inactivity, insufficient RE, and long ST above 8 hours.
Results: Of the total 28,146 participants, 633 had a history of stroke. Among stroke survivors, aerobic physical inactivity was much more common, they did RE less often, and their ST was longer. Older age ≥80 years (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]=5.45, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.96–15.15, p=0.001), lower education level ≤9 years (aOR=2.18, 95%CI 1.13–4.18, p=0.019), and living in rural areas (aOR=1.91, 95% CI 1.11–3.29, p=0.020) were associated with aerobic physical inactivity. Female sex (OR=2.36, 95%CI 1.28–4.35, p=0.006) and lower education level ≤9 years (aOR=2.31, 95%CI 1.01–5.34, p=0.048) were associated with an insufficient amount of RE. Finally, living with no economic activity (aOR=1.9. 95% CI 1.21–2.96, p=0.001), being single (aOR=1.68, 95%CI 1.21–1.96, p=0.049), and being subjectively unhealthy (OR=1.59, 95%CI 1.01–2.49, p=0.027) were independent predictors for long ST.
Conclusions: This study highlights the need for targeted strategies to reduce ST and promote PA and RE among stroke survivors. Further, multifaceted research and policy studies are needed.
