A Comparative Study of the aortic root angle in aortic dissection and aortic aneurysm

Abstract Body: Aims and Objectives- Various risk factors have been acknowledged as predisposing factors for development of aortic dissection and aneurysm. But, recently it was observed that unusual aortic root angle has a crucial bearing on these diseases. We aimed to assess and evaluate the relationship of aortic root angle in patients with aortic dissection and aneurysm as well as in patients without these diseases.
Study design- A retrospective case-control study was conducted on fifty cases each referred with aortic dissection and aneurysm and fifty controls selected amongst those who underwent CT angiograms without any evidence of aortic dissection and aneurysm during the period of November 2019 to September 2021.

Results - The aortic root angle in the dissection and aneurysm group was significantly higher than the control group. The mean aortic root angle in tricuspid aortic valve was in aortic dissection- 26.43°, aneurysm- 21.47° compared to the control group of 12° (p value-0.001) and in bicuspid aortic valve: dissection- 35.83°, aneurysm- 32°as compared to the control of 13.66° (p value- 0.001). The Pearson test showed that there was no significant correlation of aortic root angle with various diameters in case and control groups. The diameters in aortic dissection and aneurysm were almost the same but significantly lower in control group. The presence of bicuspid aortic valve was statistically correlated and was associated with higher aortic root angle in case but not in control group. Age groups and genders had not affected aortic root angle size amongst aortic dissection, aneurysm and control groups.

Conclusion- Aortic root angle was independently in direct association with aortic dissection and aneurysm and was more in bicuspid aortic valve than in tricuspid aortic valve.
