Comparison of mortality between stroke and atrial fibrillation in Brazil over the past 26 years

Abstract Body:

Atrial fibrillation stands out as the most prevalent arrhythmia, with its incidence increasing with age. Conversely, stroke ranks as the second leading cause of mortality in Brazil and represents the primary contributor to global disability. Recognizing the gravity of these conditions, this study seeks to elucidate the epidemiological landscape of atrial fibrillation and stroke-related deaths in Brazil spanning from 1996 to 2022.The investigation encompasses parameters as region, federative unit, age demographics, gender distribution, year of mortality, race/ethnicity, educational attainment, and geographic location to delineate the trend and magnitude of these diseases. This research adopts a descriptive approach through a retrospective exploratory epidemiological , drawing upon data sourced from the Mortality Information System (SIM) accessible through the Department of Health Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS) and organized in tables. Across the 26-year period, Brazil registered a cumulative count of 1,201,327 fatalities. In addition to a significant dominance of the Southeast region, which accounted for 1,135,332 (94.5%) stroke-related deaths, 65,995 deaths to atrial fibrillation, alongside a concentration of 303,886 (52%) doctors in the region capable of identification and notification.According to age ranges, atrial fibrillation corresponds to a prevalence of 80 years or more (32,890) and for stroke, this age range corresponds to 84.1% when adding up the age ranges, with the hegemony of 80 years or more (417,583).About the location, the highest incidence is 73.6% in the hospital (884,302 cases), followed by domicile at 20.9% (251,501) cases. In conclusion, this study seeks a paradigm shift in disease control strategies at the biggest contry in the South America, as well as elucidating professional qualitative and quantitative diagnostic efficiency, highlighting the need to reinforce the remodeling of disease control actions, improving on health education, on quality of life and effectiveness of public health policies.
